What is the Blockchain?

The Blockchain is a type of distributed ledger technology (DLT) that makes it nearly impossible to hack or forge the data stored on it. Its most well-known application is as a form of digital currency, known as cryptocurrency, but it can be used for much more than that. For example, it could be used to record votes in a democratic election or to verify product inventories or state identifications.

Blockchain technology works by distributing information across many computers and devices simultaneously. Each computer on the network, called a “node,” has a copy of the blockchain and updates it at the same time. This ensures that there is no single point of failure and that all the copies are identical. In addition, each node has to approve all transactions before they are added to the database. This reduces the number of people involved in the process, making it less susceptible to human error.

Each block of information is collected in a block, much like a cell in a spreadsheet, and then run through an encryption algorithm that creates a hexadecimal number called a “hashing value.” This hash value is then linked to the previous block in the chain. Since it is nearly impossible to change any of the information once it is recorded on a blockchain, the chain of blocks is considered immutable.
