Some of My Favorite Places:

Listed next to a few of the counties is a description of one of my favorite places to bird there.  I hope you find them helpful.

 You owe it to yourself to try to make it to a field trip into the Hamilton County phosphate mines.  Ducks, shorebirds, sparrows, raptors in abundance make for a great birding trip.

To me, Jefferson County is a real challenge.  But one of the gems of the county is Wacissa Springs.  It's a lovely little park with a nice view of the Wacissa River, and it always seems to be birdy.  Several locals rent canoes and kayaks.  That is definitely in my plans for the future.  A canoe trip from Wacissa to Goose Pasture ought to be gorgeous and finally get me over the 100 mark!

Is there a more comfortable spot to watch birds than from the cabin at Tall Timbers.  Relax while the birds come to you ... what an idea!

Seriously, Tall Timbers is a gorgeous place for a long hike and a lot of birds.  I spent a night in one of the cabins and spent the next day exploring the park.   Who knew a Gator could enjoy Leon County so much?

The best birding day of my life was spent in and around Cedar Key.  Warblers seemed to be fighting each other for space on tree limbs.  The usual stops on any Levy County trip include Bridge 4, Shell Mound (don't forget the campground area), the cemetery, the museum and the airport (don't forget the small pond next to the runway.

County listers might also want to check along SR 24 just inside the Levy County border after leaving Alachua County.  There are Bachman's Sparrows on the south side of the road.
